Eyelash Shedding Season - Everything you need to know!

Understanding the phenomenon of lash shedding is a crucial aspect of maintaining healthy and natural looking lashes.

Let’s delve into the intricacies of lash shedding, fill you in on the facts and debunk the myths!

As springtime approaches, we thought we’d give you the lowdown on lash shedding season. In the spring and autumn, we have witnessed many lash clients wonder why they’re losing more lashes, and so many lash artists wonder why the retention of their sets is decreasing. Fear not, because we have the answer – it’s all part of lash shedding season and it is completely natural.

The lash life cycle

Like all hair on our bodies, eyelashes have a life cycle consisting of three phases: Anagen (growth), Catagen (transition), and Telogen (resting or shedding). Understanding this cycle is key to comprehending why lash shedding is a completely normal and natural occurrence.

The hair growth cycle consists of three main phases: anagen, catagen, and telogen. During anagen, hair actively grows; in catagen, it transitions to a resting phase; and in telogen, hair sheds to make way for new growth.

How many lashes shed each day?

On average, a person can lose anywhere from one to five natural lashes per day. Over the course of the week this can add up to 35 lashes. That’s about 20% of eyelash extensions from a set. This shedding is part of the natural growth cycle, and is considered normal and healthy. New lashes are constantly emerging to replace the ones that have completed their life cycle.

Why we may experience increased lash shedding during spring?

In spring, it’s common to experience increased lash shedding due to seasonal changes and environmental factors. One reason for this could be the transition from colder, drier winter air to warmer, more humid spring weather. Changes in humidity levels can affect the moisture balance of the skin and hair follicles, potentially leading to increased shedding. Additionally, seasonal allergies during spring can cause eye irritation and rubbing, which may contribute to lash breakage. Hormonal fluctuations that occur with seasonal changes can also play a role in lash shedding. However, it’s important to note that while some individuals may notice more lash shedding in spring, others may not experience any significant changes.

What causes lash shedding?

Several factors contribute to lash shedding. Hormonal changes, age, genetics, and overall health can influence the rate at which lashes shed. Additionally, certain habits like rubbing the eyes or using harsh makeup removers can expedite the shedding process.

Eyelash extensions and shedding:

For those who enjoy eyelash extensions, it's crucial to understand that extensions are applied to your natural lashes, and they too follow the natural growth cycle. The shedding of extensions is often more noticeable, as the longer, darker lashes fall out along with the natural lashes they are attached to.

Myths about lash shedding:

1. Applying mascara causes lash shedding.

False: When applied and removed gently, mascara does not cause lash shedding. It’s aggressive rubbing during makeup removal that can contribute to lash removal.

2. Eyelash extensions ruin your natural lashes.

False: when applied by a skilled technician and properly cared for, eyelash extensions do not damage natural lashes. Shedding is a natural part of the lash cycle.

3.Lash perms or lifts increase lash shedding.

False: When performed by a trained professional, lash perms or lifts should not increase lash shedding. These treatments aim to enhance the appearance of natural lashes without affecting their growth cycle or causing shedding.

Caring for your lashes:

Gentle makeup removal:

Be mindful when removing makeup to avoid unnecessary rubbing or pulling on your lashes. Opt for gentle oil-free makeup removers.

Hydration and Nutrition:

Maintain overall health to support lash health. Staying hydrated and consuming a balance diet rich in vitamins and nutrients contributes to healthy hair growth.

Usage of lash serums:

Incorporate lash serums into your routine to promote lash health and length. These serums are formulated with nourishing ingredients that help strengthen lashes and encourage growth. Apply the serum according to the manufacturer’s instructions consistently for best results. Remember, patience is key as it may take several weeks to see noticeable improvements in lash length and density.

Professional application:

When opting for eyelashes extensions or lash lifts, leaving it to the professionals is always best to ensure  proper application is facilitated.

Managing lash extensions during periods of increased shedding

If you’re a lash extension lover, navigating increased shedding during spring can be a concern. One proactive step is to schedule your lash extension appointments more frequently during this time. By scheduling appointments closer together, your lashes will look their best, even as the shedding cycle fluctuates with the seasons.

Lash shedding is a natural part of the cycle that ensures the continuous renewal of your eyelashes. Instead of fearing it, embrace the process, and appreciate the beauty of your lashes at every stage. Whether you're on a natural lash journey or enjoying the glamour of extensions, understanding lash shedding is the first step towards maintaining a healthy and vibrant lash line.
